It probably sounds ludicrous even to imagine that anyone could get a degree in fashion designing through an online program, when you think of what's involved, such as designing patterns, cutting and sewing fabric, using models, and so on. It seems like a very tactile thing, and unless there's some kind of virtual reality course now available, it simply can't be done on the internet. The only real way to get a fashion design degree is to attend a traditional fashion school. Isn't that right?
However, remember that fashion designing doesn't only involve that physical work with fabric and clothing. In fact, most of what you'd be learning in fashion programs even at the big schools would be theory, history, and some more technical subjects. And it isn't strictly necessary that you need to be on campus to learn about things like fashion history, how to spot trends, materials and textiles, or the business side of the fashion world. Many elements of a fashion degree, like learning the pattern making, graphic design, and other digital arts are now usually learned through the computer. So if you are disciplined enough to complete the reading and online assignments, you can cover a great deal of this material without being on-site.
Another side of the fashion industry that lends itself to online study is the business and merchandising aspect of things. Fashion designing is just one part of the industry, and the business side is much more theoretical and obviously, much less hands-on. Many fashion programs make a distinction between the two, in fact. The types of things you'd need to learn for a merchandising degree, such as marketing principles and methods, could easily be studied through online courses.
It might take a bit of tweaking to launch your fashion design career through online programs. You will undoubtedly still need to arrange some in-person internships at a studio somewhere, since that simply can't be done online. You might also have the added expense of getting your own industrial sewing machine, which would otherwise have been provided on campus. But much of your fashion designing course can indeed be handled through the internet. If it would save you money and you could get a reputable degree by this method, it should be one of the options you consider.
